Discussion Paper: The View From DC in November 2023
In November 2023, Martin Cocker attended the Family Online Safety Institute (Fosi.org) Annual Conference titled New Frontiers in Online Safety in Washington DC with funding support from the New Zealand Lottery Minister’s Discretionary Fund. The trip included a separate event hosted by ActiveFence focused on emerging AI threats and meetings with other online safety people also in town for the FOSI Conference.
This discussion paper outlines his key takeaways from that trip. The paper is structured into four parts being: Artificial Intelligence, Online Safety Regulation, Social Media and Youth Mental Health, and Online Safety and Economics.
The FOSI conference brings together tech industry employees, NGO online safety practitioners and Government regulators from the US and around the world. It attracts high caliber presenters and speakers and is highly productive event on the margins. The Online Safety Exchange highly recommends the event for online safety practitioners.
More information about the conference can be found on the FOSI website, and videos of the FOSI conference sessions are available to view on their YouTube channel.
